Helping individuals and small businesses navigate change with clarity and confidence.
If you're used to writing a check to the IRS—or waiting for one in the mail—there’s a big change coming you need to know about. As part of a federal modernization effort, the IRS will require nearly all tax-related payments and refunds to be processed electronically by September 30, 2025. This shift is designed to increase efficiency, reduce fraud, and save costs across the board.

What’s Changing?
In short, the IRS is phasing out paper checks. That means:
Tax refunds will be issued electronically—via direct deposit, debit cards, or other approved digital methods.
Payments to the IRS (including taxes owed, estimated payments, penalties, and other fees) must also be made electronically using approved methods like credit/debit cards, digital wallets, or the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS).
If you or your business are still mailing paper checks for tax purposes, it’s time to start planning for this transition.
Are There Any Exceptions?
Yes—but they’re limited. Exceptions may apply for individuals without access to banking or electronic systems, certain emergency payments, and rare cases tied to national security or existing legal restrictions. The Treasury Department will issue guidance on how to request an exception, but details are still pending.
What This Means for You
For most taxpayers and small businesses, this change will streamline the process—but it does require a shift in habits. It’s important to:
Ensure your banking information is current with the IRS to avoid refund delays.
Get familiar with approved electronic payment options, such as EFTPS or secure card payment portals.
Discuss any special circumstances with your tax advisor ahead of the September 2025 deadline.
